Abu Dhabi può essere una meta turistica a sé (se stai visitando gli Emirati), ma si presta bene anche per essere vista nel corso di uno scalo lungo poiché questa città è punto di passaggio per voli in Medio Oriente e in Asia. A me, che sono specializzata nel Medio Oriente arabo levantino e che viaggio e vivo in questa parte di mondo (abito a Petra), capita con una certa frequenza di essere ad Abu Dhabi. Allora ecco di seguito consigli su cosa vedere a Abu Dhabi.
La Moschea Bianca dello sceicco Zayed, un must per chi arriva ad Abu Dhabi anche solo per uno scalo lungo
COME ARRIVARE
Se la tua destinazione finale è proprio Abu Dhabi, un modo conveniente di raggiungerla è la compagnia low cost Wizz Air che ha voli anche da Roma.
Altrimenti per voli a lungo raggio Etihad è la compagnia che fa scalo ad Abu Dhabi.
REQUISITI D’INGRESSO
Per entrare ad Abu Dhabi non serve richiedere il visto preventivo se viaggi con passaporto italiano. È sufficiente che il documento abbia una validità residua di almeno 6 mesi dal momento d’ingresso e in riceverai all’arrivo il visto che ti permette di stare fino a 30 giorni. Se è la prima volta che il tuo passaporto entra negli Emirati, in dogana dovrai fare la fila alla normale postazione dove ti applicheranno il timbro. Se invece sei già stato con lo stesso passaporto nella federazione, allora puoi andare ai tornelli elettronici che sono più veloci.
RAGGIUNGERE LA CITTÀ
Dall’aeroporto puoi raggiungere la città in 2 modi:
1) TAXI O CAREEM/UBER: il prezzo standard è AED120 ovvero circa €20.
2) BUS: esci dopo il ritiro bagagli, vai al desk del bus e fai la tessera prepagata Hafilat che si può pagare con carta di credito. La tessera è gratuita, ma il minimo ricaricabile è AED20 (ricorda però che per ricaricarla alle macchinette in città, fuori dall’aeroporto, potrai usare solo i contanti). La corsa in bus aeroporto-città costa AED4 (€1). Questa stessa tessera puoi usarla per i bus dentro la città (vedi prossimo paragrafo).
Per arrivare in centro città o fino alla zona Corniche dall’aeroporto prendi il bus A2 o A1, passano ogni 20 minuti.
COME SPOSTARSI
L’ideale è utilizzare Careem, un’applicazione araba tipo Uber. È efficiente, economica e si può pagare sia cash sia con carta.
Ci sono bus operativi 24 ore su 24, ma è un modo più scomodo è lento di spostarsi. Inoltre considera che le distanze sono notevoli e i luoghi di interesse sono collocati in zone distanti l’una dall’altra. Se decidi di spostarti con i bus devi acquistare, presso i distributori automatici delle fermate e stazioni, la Hafilat Card (tessera ricaricabile). Le corse costano AED2. Attenzione a non confonderla con la NOL card dei mezzi pubblici di Dubai: sono due compagnie diverse.
DOVE DORMIRE
A differenza di ciò che si può pensare, Abu Dhabi non è eccessivamente cara. Si trovano sistemazioni e ristoranti per tutte le tasche. Un albergo di media categoria costa come in Italia e a volte si trovano offerte vantaggiose su Booking. Incredibile ma vero, puoi trovare anche alloggi a budget in camerata (a €10 a notte)… ma considera che non si tratta di veri e propri ostelli, ma di appartamenti adibiti a ostelli con camere veramente minuscole. Tuttavia se viaggi con budget e la cosa non ti importa sono la soluzione più economica e inoltre sono sicuri. Il posto che più somiglia a in vero e proprio un ostello ad Abu Dhabi è The Villa Hostel Abu Dhabi. Pulito, camerate attrezzate, cucina e una hall comoda. I prezzi stanno sui €30 a notte.
Se cerchi un hotel normale invece c’è l’imbarazzo della scelta. Io mi trovo bene al TRYP by Wyndham City Centre: 4 stelle, quando è in offerta la doppia costa sui €40 a notte; si trova in downtown (centro) che è una zona che consiglio per i servizi e la “vicinanza” (tra virgolette perché ad Abu Dhabi le distanze tra le attrazioni sono comunque grandi) ad alcuni punti di interesse.
VALUTA E PREZZI
La valuta è il dirham emiratino (AED): 1AED=€0,25.
Ad Abu Dhabi il pagamento con carta è molto diffuso, quindi a meno che non devi prendere mezzi pubblici puoi evitare di cambiare e prelevare.
Nella città si trovano prezzi di tutti i tipi: dal lusso più sfrenato (dopotutto siamo negli Emirati!) a prezzi medi e più popolari.
Per risparmiare vai a mangiare nei ristoranti degli immigrati (gran parte dei residenti nel paese sono indiani, pachistani e filippini) piuttosto che in quelli per turisti.
QUANTI GIORNI
Per visitare Abu Dhabi un paio di giorni permettono di vedere le attrattive principali. Con un terzo giorno hai tempo di fare esperienze come al Ferrari World e al Parco delle Mangrovie o rilassarti in qualche spiaggia.
COSA VEDERE A ABU DHABI
1) La grande moschea dello sceicco Zayed
Questo è il posto più iconico di Abu Dhabi e più vicino all’aeroporto, quindi se hai uno scalo non troppo lungo è limitati a questa attrazione. La moschea bianca di Abu Dhabi è uno dei must see di Abu Dhabi: non perdertela! È davvero imponente ed elegante, senza dubbio la moschea più bella che io abbia visitato finora.
Aperta tutti i giorni 9-22, venerdì 9-12 e 15-21. Durante festività e Ramadan gli orari sono soggetti a modifiche.
Per entrare vestiti in maniera appropriata: pantaloni e magliette a maniche lunghe, non attillati, non trasparenti e niente scollature. Vale sia per uomini sia per donne (le donne anche testa coperta). Se non hai abiti adeguati puoi acquistare una sopravveste e un hijab (per le donne) nel centro commerciale chiamato Souq Aljami che bisogna attraversare per raggiungere la moschea. La moschea non fornisce più abiti coprenti: dovrai pensarci tu.
Per entrare è necessaria la prenotazione che si fa gratuitamente inquadrando il codice QR che si trova al desk di informazioni del centro commerciale o nel sito web
È lontana dal centro quindi arrivaci in auto: prendi un Careem (costo €17-20 dal centro città). Altrimenti l’autobus 94 collega la stazione Al Wahda e la moschea.
2) Qasr al Watan
Il Palazzo presidenziale è di uno sfarzo ed un’eleganza mai vista! È stata una piacevole sorpresa.

3) Louvre di Abu Dhabi
Al terzo posto su cosa vedere a Abu Dhabi, inserisco questo museo modernissimo conserva reperti preziosi che, un po’ come il Louvre a cui si ispira, intende ripercorrere la storia delle grandi civiltà.
È molto attrezzato con café e ristoranti e rappresenta una visita da non perdere ad Abu Dhabi.
Aperto 10-18:30 il biglietto costa AED63, è acquistabile in loco o sul sito internet ed è gratuito ogni primo sabato del mese è il 14 Luglio. Si trova sull’isola Saadiyat, in quello che è chiamato il cultural district e ci si arriva con l’autobus 94.
4) Qasr Al Hosn
Qasr Al Hosn è una fortezza/palazzo risalente agli arbori dell’emirato. Nel bel mezzo della città, circondato da grattacieli, questo edificio in stile arabo con un ampio cortile interno porticato e tradizionali torrette di guardia è un bell’esempio di architettura classica. È interamente ristrutturato quindi appare quasi finto, ma non a livelli eccessivi e vale davvero la visita. All’interno ci sono delle sale museali modernissime e interattive che mostrano e spiegano la storia dell’emirato.
L’ultima tappa della visita è il bellissimo centro artigianale degli Emirati e la “casa del caffè”: ogni mezz’ora all’interno di una tenda beduina preparano, spiegano e fanno assaggiare il qahwa, ovvero il caffè arabo (o beduino) aromatizzato al cardamomo.
Aperto tutti i giorni 10-19 il biglietto costa AED30 pagabili sia con carta sia cash.
5) Emirates Palace
È l’hotel più esclusivo di Abu Dhabi a cui si può accedere nelle aree della hall e del ristorante… dove servono anche tazze di cappuccino con foglia d’oro alla “modica” cifra di €20?
6) Observation Deck at 300
Questo elegante bar si trova al 74esimo piano della Torre Conrad delle Etihad Towers. Dai suoi 300 metri di altezza potrai ammirare il panorama sui grattacieli circostanti, Qasr al Watan, e il Golfo arabo. Vale la pena per un aperitivo con vista, ma non è imperdibile… soprattutto potrebbero pulirle le vetrate della torre ????. Vienici poco prima del tramonto per godere della bella luce calda e il panorama notturno.
Per sedersi c’è una consumazione obbligatoria che si aggira sugli €8… ma tanto quello è più o meno il prezzo più basso di un drink all’Observation.
Orari 12-20.
7) Ferrari World
Non si tratta di un museo, come pensavo io all’inizio, ma di un parco giochi a tema Ferrari. Il punto forte sono le 4 montagne russe, una delle quali (la Formula Rossa) riproduce l’accelerazione e la velocità di un’auto di Formula 1. L’esperienza è fighissima, ma se le montagne russe non fanno per te o non sei sfegatato di Ferrari non ti consiglio di venirci.
In caso contrario il Ferrari World è un’ottima idea per gli scali medio-lunghi o se hai un solo pomeriggio da passare ad Abu Dhabi. Infatti in 4 ore si riesce a provare le attrazioni principali. Inoltre si trova sull’isola di Yas, non lontano dalla zona aeroporto e dispone di un deposito bagagli (AED25 a bagaglio).
Il biglietto d’ingresso costa AED380 (circa €90), ma se lo acquisti sul loro sito internet o viaggi con Etihad hai il 10% di sconto.
Orari: Lun-Sab 12-20; Domenica 11-20.
È collegato con i mezzi pubblici: da downtown prendi il bus 102.
8) Ospedale dei falchi di Abu Dhabi
Cosa vedere di alternativo a Abu Dhabi? L’ospedale dei falchi! Si entra solo con visite guidate prenotabili sul loro sito internet. Ce ne sono 2 al giorno: alle 10 e alle 14. Le visite sono in inglese, durano 2 ore e sono molto interessanti e le guide sono molto simpatiche.
Ti daranno informazioni su questi rapaci e ti mostreranno come si prendono cura di loro.
La visita costa AED170.
È lontano dal centro città, arrivaci con Careem. La corsa costa €20-25. Rimane invece più vicino all’aeroporto.
